What is this site?
It's not just a clever name. Pingsalot.com is a ping service bloggers use to get instant attention to their latest articles. Ping services will then place a link to your blog, site or article on their highly optimized (and frequently-crawled) web pages and directories.
Aren't there other ping services like this?
We have created Pingsalot.com with many advantages. Most notably we have used our years of programming and web server experience to provide a highly-optimized and dynamic service. We have designed our site with the user in mind, with features such as full server responses, so you know exactly what's going on with your submissions; parallel processing, so you don't have to wait too long; IP rotation and more. We are at-the-ready dealing with security issues, sping, web server load, configuration, etc. and are excited about scaling to demand.
What happens when I submit my URL?
Your request is queued and picked up by a background process. You are brought to a page where the status of each individual ping is shown and updated in real time. When all pings are complete the page will automatically refresh to reveal links to full detailed responses from each server, for you curious types ;-). Soon after submission you will start to see blog crawlers in your web access logs.
Should I submit my URL here AND at other sites?
We highly recommend you submit servers so we can take care of pinging them for you. The only ping you should ever need to make is to Pingsalot.com
How do you guarantee submission?
We read the response directly from the target server. Services that return the standard response are said to be guaranteed to have accepted our ping. We also scan for a few select strings, such as "Thanks for the ping!" to catch those who don't follow the standards but return responses where it is obvious the ping was accepted.
How are server failures handled?
If we can't connect to a server or there is a problem (anything other than a 200 OK or Accepted response) we take corrective action. The problematic server is initially excluded from all ping requests for 5 minutes. We then retry with delays based on a factor of 5 mins (5/10/20/35/55/80/110). When 15 failures are reached (about 48 hours) the server is automatically permanently deactivated.
Do you have an RPC server I can use to ping directly from my blog software?
No, we unfortunately do not offer this service at this time. We make very little money with this web site and therefore need you to keep coming back. To support Pingsalot.com please consider our advertisers!
What other features are coming?
We're not sure, yet. One idea is to automatically save a list of your recent pings in a cookie (no reg. required) so you can browse the results quickly and easily for 24 to 48 hours. If you have any other suggestions please let us know!
